The sitter, tenderly rendered in the present work, is Vuillard’s sister Marie, affectionately known as ‘Mimi.’ Between 1890-1891, Vuillard referred to her in his diary as ‘Mimi in yellow,’ evoking her as she appears here in a vibrant canary yellow dress. Depicted with quiet introspection, Mimi embodies the intimate, domestic world that so often inspired Vuillard’s work.
