Likely from one side of a quadrangular altar, this relief depicts Silenus, the paidagogos (tutor) of Dionysus, holding a tall shaft in his left hand and a phiale or shell in his right, all framed within a stepped border. Another side from the same altar with Dionysus and a panther was last sold at Antiquities, Christie’s, New York, 9 June 2011, lot 163.

For a related altar with Dionysus and Silenus, see the example in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Tarquinia, Arachne Online Database no. 6274304.
