Boarding a Ship or Visit to a Ship was part of the collection of Carle Dreyfus (1875–1952), before being inherited by his niece, Alice Goldschmidt (1906–2008), who married Maurice Stern (1888–1962). An expert in French sculpture, objets d'art and furniture, Carle Dreyfus worked mainly at the Louvre, for which he published several major works on the museum's collections. In 1933, he became curator of the Department of Decorative Arts, but was forced to leave his post in 1940 due to the Vichy regime's laws on the status of Jews. Protected by his colleagues, he went into hiding during the war. After the liberation, he advised the Commission for the Recovery of Artistic Property and participated in the restitution of stolen works. He then resumed his work at the Louvre Museum until his death in 1952.

Boarding a Ship ou Visit to a Ship figurait dans la collection de Carle Dreyfus (1875-1952), avant que sa nièce, Alice Goldschmidt (1906-2008) qui avait épousé Maurice Stern (1888-1962), n'en hérite. Expert en sculpture, objets d’art et mobilier français, Carle Dreyfus a principalement travaillé au Louvre, pour lequel il a publié plusieurs ouvrages majeurs sur les collections du musée. En 1933, il devient conservateur du département des objets d’art, mais est contraint de quitter son poste en 1940 en raison des lois sur le statut des Juifs du régime de Vichy. Protégé par ses collègues, il se cache durant la guerre. Après la libération, il conseille la Commission de récupération artistique et participe à la restitution des œuvres volées. Il reprend ensuite son travail au musée du Louvre jusqu’à sa mort en 1952.
