Designed in the French 'antique' style in the form of krater-shaped 'sacred urns' on drum-form altar plinths with double stepped bases, these ormolu-mounted vases were used as 'essence pots' or incense-burners. Described as 'Lyre essence vase, white marble,' the pattern was featured in the Boulton's 1782 stock list. The mounts, notably the lyres and the bucrania, may owe their design to William Chambers or Dietrich Anderson.

Other 'Lyre' vases in white marble include:
1. A pair from the collection of Mrs. Robert Tritton, Godmersham Park, Kent; Christie's, 6 June 1983, lot 97 (N. Goodison, Matthew Boulton: Ormolu, 2002, fig. 347).

2. A pair sold Christie's New York, 17 October 1997, lot 218 ($134,500) and now in a private collection (N. Goodison, Ormolu: The Work of Matthew Boulton, 1974, fig. 117).

3. A pair sold from the Estate of the Late Lady Samuel of Wych Cross; Sotheby's, London, 18 November 2018, lot 77.

A further single vase of the 'Lyre' model, executed in blue john, is in volume one of The Irene Aitken Collection.
