A wicker basket holding cherries, parsnips, a cabbage and other fruit, with a flagon, flowers and a partially peeled orange on a ledge

The present canvas relates closely to a small group of still lifes ascribed to Bernardo Strozzi and thought to date from the last decade of his life, following his move to Venice in 1631. Chief among these is a still life published by Daniele Sanguineti in the catalog of the 1995 exhibition at the Palazzo Ducale, Genoa (see D. Sanguineti, in La Pittura a Genova e in Liguria dal Seicento al primo Novecento, exhibition catalog, Genoa, 1995, no. 67), which shares a nearly identical cabbage and includes similarly arranged vegetables on a ledge against a dark ground. The same cabbage, rendered with characteristic veined leaves catching the light, also appears in a still life by Strozzi in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Milan. Further still lifes by Strozzi, including that formerly in the Museo del Castello Sforzesco, Milan, have in the past been attributed to Simone del Tintore.
