This guitar was made for Steve Earle by John Dillion in Bloomsburg, PA. Earle played it on several tours and notably used it to record the song 'Ellis Unit One' for the 1996 soundtrack album thematically linked to the death row movie Dead Man Walking (1995), starring Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon. The soundtrack album featured several songs written from the perspectives of characters in the film, with Earle, who has long been a staunch opponent of capital punishment, writing his song from the point of view of a prison guard.
