Christie’s is extremely pleased to present to collectors this almost certainly unique platinum reference 3970EP-047, featuring a stunning black monogram dial confirmed by its Certificate of Origin. The dial features a white tachymeter scale, luminous hands and indexes, and an extremely uncommon configuration for this reference. The watch was specially commissioned for the well-known American collector Michael Steven Ovitz, whose initials 'M.S.O.' are tastefully monogrammed at six o'clock.
The black dial, confirmed by the Certificate of Origin, is highly unusual. Not only is the color itself rarely encountered on this reference, but the presence of luminous indexes and hands further distinguishes it from standard examples. In addition, the dial features a tachymeter scale, an attribute seen on only a very small number of reference 3970 watches. These rare tachymeter dials were typically produced only as special commissions or reserved for Patek Philippe’s most important clients.
It is thought that Patek Philippe may have kept a small inventory of movements and cases after the reference was formally discontinued in 2004, or it may have been able to continue producing them in incredibly small quantities, enabling some exceptional pieces to be made privately for esteemed collectors. Over the years, a number of these unique commissions have emerged, including the present exceptional example.

Michael Steven Ovitz, who was president of The Walt Disney Company from 1995 to 1997, is widely regarded as one of the most influential people in Hollywood during the 1980s and early 1990s. Mr. Ovitz was one of the very few customers for whom Patek Philippe agreed to create bespoke timepieces with his own monogram on the dial. He was an avid collector with over thirty years of experience. He commissioned a number of references in various metals over the years, each with distinctive dial variations. Ovitz once said of the manufacturer: 'They were terrific and accommodated everything I wanted'.
