One of the earliest and most elusive parts of the Submariner story, the Rolex Submariner reference 6536⁄1 was first introduced in 1955 and was manufactured for just four years, until 1959. It was one of the first Submariners to be equipped with the then-new caliber 1030 and to have the now-iconic no-crown-guard case, a silhouette that characterizes the purity of early Rolex sports watches, along with its sister reference 6536.
At first glance, the two references seem nearly identical, but they differ slightly. While the 6536 had a thicker, more durable construction, the 6536⁄1 was made with a slightly slimmer case and a slightly larger diameter, giving it a more refined profile on the wrist. Although Rolex never provided an official explanation for the simultaneous sale of these two nearly identical models, it is generally accepted that the sleeker 6536⁄1 was meant for the general public, while the more robust 6536 was targeted at professional users.
