Kyobashi Bridge was the second bridge after Nihonbashi along the Tokaido highway. Although the area has since been completely reclaimed, the Kyobashi River was once a bustling center for bamboo wholesalers, who supplied bamboo for construction and everyday goods. Because of its importance as a bamboo market, the area became known as Takegashi (“Bamboo Wharf”). In this design, rows of bamboo poles, illuminated by moonlight, are arranged neatly along the bank like a wall, creating a strong diagonal composition.
One of the pedestrians crossing the bridge carries a lantern bearing the inscription Horitake, referring to Yokogawa Takejiro (1847–1865), one of the finest woodblock carvers who frequently worked for Hiroshige.
The blue bokashi surrounding the moon, two areas of purple bokashi in the sky, the blue bokashi along the left riverbank, and the black upper and blue lower borders are characteristic features of early impressions of this design.
