Hiroshige’s Saruwakamachi yoru no kei is a remarkable example of his sophisticated approach to pictorial space. The deep recession of the street, created through strongly converging lines and diminishing architectural forms, reveals the influence of Western linear perspective which entered Japan through imported Dutch prints and illustrated books. Rather than simply adopting this foreign device, Hiroshige transformed it within the visual language using perspective, atmospheric gradation and the warm glow of lanterns to create an exceptionally immersive view of Edo. The composition demonstrates Hiroshige’s ability to incorporate new approaches to spatial representation while maintaining the distinctive poetic character of the Japanese woodblock print.
