Hiroshige presents an elegant view of Mount Fuji rising beyond a gently rolling landscape, with a narrow stream descending as a waterfall in the foreground. Particularly striking is the treatment of Fuji and the surrounding kasumi (haze), which are rendered entirely without outlines. Instead, subtle gradations of pale color allow the mountain and haze to dissolve softly into the surrounding sky, creating an exceptionally atmospheric sense of distance. Tall pine trees frame the composition, while the red band of the distant horizon provides a restrained accent of color. The broad, curving format of the fan enhances the panoramic quality of the scene, while the simplified forms and delicate tonal transitions give the design a quiet and poetic character.
