FIRST EDITION, containing one of the few 15th-century references to the new discoveries in the New World. In his treatment of the extent of the law of Christ (Bk.3, chap.11), Baptista includes 'islands inhabited by man, also much larger than ours' which were hitherto unknown to Strabo, Ptolemy, Pomponius Mela, and Pliny, but which have recently been found, due to the work of the kings of Spain. Although ostensibly a guide to meditation and patience written for the Carmelite order by the poet, philosopher and theologian who was later General of the order, the work also discusses death, disease and medical cures, as well as spiritual health.
