It is rare to find a pair of carved lacquer dou. The form of these pedestalled offering bowls with covers was mentioned in the Book of Rites and is known since the Warring States period in both bronze and pottery. Compare a pair of woven bamboo dou of similar form and size, lacquered inside and with Qianlong six-character marks, illustrated by J.C.Y. Watt, The Sumptuous Basket, China House Gallery, China Institute in America, 1985, pp. 38-9.
