ROWLING, J.K. (b. 1965).
[A complete set of signed Harry Potter first editions]. London: Bloomsbury, 1997-2007.
Signed first editions of the seven Harry Potter books, including the rare hardback first edition, first impression of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, one of just 500 copies printed. A fine and fresh set.
While the story of the boy wizard would go on to take the world by storm, Rowling was totally unknown upon its first publication. Of the 500 copies of the hardback version of the first book, 300 went to public libraries and were read enthusiastically by children up and down the country, often to the point of disrepair. The fresh condition of the copy in this set, and the lack of any library markings, indicates it was one of the 200 copies which were sold through UK bookshops. After the phenomenal success of the first book, the boy wizard’s adventures continued, with each successive book covering a year at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, and with the print runs of the first editions increasing in line with expected demand.
Together 7 vols, octavo. Comprising: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. London: Bloomsbury, 1997. First edition, first impression. Signed on the title. Original pictorial boards by Thomas Taylor (trivial rubbing at corners and shallow abrasions to laminate as usual, spine near-imperceptibly faded); custom red morocco-backed box by the Chelsea Bindery. Errington A1(a) [With:] –Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. London: Bloomsbury, 1998. First edition, first impression. Signed on the title. Original pictorial boards, dust-jacket with design repeated. Errington A2(a) [and:] –Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. London: Bloomsbury, 1999. First edition, first impression, first state.
