After more than two hundred years of selling 19th Century European paintings, Christie’s has the experience, expertise and passion needed to help you discover this innovative period of numerous styles and nationalities. It is a diverse category that celebrates a century of change and records the social advancement and technical achievements that swept across Europe during this 100-year period. The art charts the impact of man on both the natural landscape and developing cities, from the social realism of Gustave Courbet’s Femme la guirlande to urban growth depicted by Giuseppe de Nittis in Trafalgar Square. Paintings by leading artists such as William Adolphe Bouguereau’s The Shepherdess are the result of years of study at the great national art academies and continue to be admired and respected by collectors today. 19th Century European Art bridges key art historical movements, with paintings such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot’s Bretonne avec sa petit fille pioneering the sensations of light and colour that the way to the new painting technique labelled Impressionism.
