Lot Essay

With distinctive stencilled and carved ornament, this pier table (now re-fitted with a card-table top) exhibits the hallmarks of New York City design circa 1830. Similar features are seen on a desk-and-bookcase long associated with the cabinetmaking firm of Joseph Meeks & Sons and now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 60.29).
