The first diving watch by Rolex with the word Submariner on the dial, reference 6204, was introduced at the Basel Fair in 1954.

The present lot, reference 5513, with the so-called 'Explorer' dial is a sought after Submariner model. The dial gets its name from the Explorer model that typically has luminous Arabic numerals at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock.

Other examples of reference 5513 are illustrated in The Best of Time - Rolex Wristwatches, by James M. Dowling & Jeffrey P. Hess, p. 267; and in Vintage Rolex Sports Models by Martin Skeet & Nick Urul, p. 37.
