A TSUBA SIGNED SEIRYUKEN EIJU, ANOTHER BY KISHU TEIMEI, A TSUBA AFTER A DESIGN BY YASUCHIKA AND EIGHT OTHERS
Edo period (17th/19th century)
A large tsuba pierced and carved with two leaves, opposed, the veins inlaid in brass and the stalks in copper, early Shoami work, 8.75cm.; an iron tsuba carved with a dragon, signed Seiryuken Eiju, with inlaid a gold kao, 7cm.; another carved with massed cherry blossoms, 7.85cm.; an oval tsuba with a plum tree in gold nunome-zogan, signed Tsuneyoshi, 7.8cm.; a mokko-shaped tsuba, unusually decorated in katami-gawari with, on one side of the zig-zag mountain retreats and on the other ships at sea, details in gold nunome-zogan, 7.4cm.; a thin nanban tsuba, carved with clouds and a ho-o, a dragon and three tama on a cloud, with details in gold nunome-zogan, the rectangular seppa-dai carved with waves, 7.7cm.; a rounded iron tsuba carved with a hermit fishing beside a mountain stream, a rustic bridge on the reverse, 8.2cm.; a circular tsuba pierced and carved with a large kao and a monkey sitting on a sprig of bamboo, signed Kishu ju Teimei, 8.1cm.; an almost circular tsuba pierced and carved with the moon seen through grasses and three miniature deer, 7.2cm.; a hexagonal Nara tsuba with a fan and a potted nasubi [egg's plant] before a window, through which Mount Fuji can be seen, the reverse with a hanging scroll and a wand for hanging the scroll, 6.85cm; and a good mokko-shaped example based on the famous design by Yasuchika I of the elephant which was brought to Japan in the Kyoho period (1716-1736), an inscription regarding the event on the reverse, 8.2cm.
