The white ground with part of a large-scale design of meandering green strapwork filled with flowers forming an ogival latice linked by palmettes and enclosing larger palmettes with green interlaced arabesque centres, all overlaying delicate tendrils issuing bright red floral sprays, occasional retouched chips, brilliant glaze, mounted on board

Lot Essay

These tiles are probably from the mihrab of the mosque of Piyale Pasha, completed in 1573. Some of the same design are published in situ (Atasoy, Nurhan and Raby, Julian: Iznik, the Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, pl.396, p.227; see also Kuran, Aptullah: Sinan, Washington D.C. and Istanbul, 1987, pls.117 and 118, p.127 or Öz, Tahsin: Turkish Ceramics, Istanbul, n.d., pl.XLIV). Another tile from the same mihrab can be found in the Çinili Kösk, Istanbul (Pasinli, Alpay and Balaman, Saliha: Turkish Tiles and Ceramics, Istanbul, 1991, back cover illustration).
