Lot Essay

Two very similar tile spandrels are in the Sadberk Hanim Museum (Altun, Ara; Carswell, John and Öney, Gönül: Turkish Tiles and Ceramics, Istanbul, 1991, no.I.78, p.47). Both have strongly moulded ribs enclosing panels of arabesques, set within a border of cusped alternating lobes. In contrast to the present example however the Sadberk Hanim examples have the inclusion of a green colour. Its lack in the present spendrels, which use the colour scheme found on most of the tiles in the Rustem Pasha mosque of 1561, indicate that they are slightly earlier than the others (although the group of tiles represented by lot 58 in this sale could demonstrate that the two are contemporaneous). A single border tile with closely related design was sold in these Rooms 10 October 2000, lot 207. Tiles of the same design are to be found in the Mosque of Rustem Pasha (Öz, Tahsin: Turkish Ceramics, Istanbul, n.d., pl.XLI, no.81). For other tiles relating to the mosque of Rustem Pasha please see lots 58 and 321.
