Signed Fujiwara Sanekage, Nambokucho Period (Late 14th Century)
Blade hirazukuri, mitsumune, forging pattern itame with jinie, tempered edge gunome ko-midare of nie with wide habuchi, utsuri, tobiyaki, muneyaki almost back to munemachi on omote, tang ubu, two holes, double gold habaki, nagasa 24.2cm, motohaba 2.2cm, with an aikuchi koshirae, black lacquer overall, shibuichi menuki of plum, 36cm., in shirasaya

Lot Essay

There were two generations of Sanekage in Kaga Province whose dated works are recorded, respectively in the Joji (1362-68) and Eitoku (1382-84) eras. The first Sanekage is said to have been a pupil of Etchu Norishige (no.28).
