Lot Essay

Maria Amalia of Austria, Archduchess of Austria and Princess of Hungary by birth; Duchess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla by marriage was the daughter of Emperor Francis I, Duke of Lorraine, Holy Roman Emperor and Grand Duke of Tuscany (1708-1765). She married Ferdinand of Bourbon, Duke of Parma (1751-1802) on the 19th of July 1769.
She was the elder sister of Marie Antoinette.
The present portrait may refer to a full-length portrait of Maria Amalia in the Collection of the Galleria Nazionale, Parma.
