MONGE, Gaspard (1746-1818). Iskustvo Lit' Pushki. Chertezhi. [The Art of Cannon Making. Atlas vol.] St. Petersburg: [Shnor, 1804].
2° (377 x 285mm). 58 engraved plates (of 60?), some of these folding. (A very few plates with old marginal repairs.) Contemporary red half sheep, flat spine ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Bernhard von Schweder (contemporary inscription).
The atlas volume for the first Russian edition of Monge's treatise on cannon making, with fine engravings relating to their manufacture and deployment. First published in Paris in 1794, in response to the call of the Committee of Public Safety to produce materials to defend the threatened Republic. RARE: WorldCat apparently records no copies of this work outside of Russia; we could only locate the text volume, also ex-Schweder, in the Stockholm University Library. Sopikov 4669.
