NICHOLAS I, Emperor of Russia (1796-1855). Gramota [Grant of Nobility and Arms] in favour of Doctor Andrei Tsee (?Sayer), in Russian, Aleksandria near St. Petersburg, 19 January 1830.
Illuminated manuscript on vellum, 7 pages, large 2° (450 x 328mm), the first page with text in gold within a border of the arms of the provinces with the displayed double-headed eagle at top, the remaining pages within border of berried wreath-tied Greek key pattern with the emperor's cypher at head, the last page signed 'Nikolai' in Cyrillic, and countersigned by Dmitrii Dashkov of the Ministry of Justice, interleaved with green watered silk (some loose and stained), in original gilt thread-covered boards (worn at extremities) with original gold thread cord and tassles attaching the circular wax seal case, maker's mark indistinct, St. Petersburg, 1830, the detachable cover applied with the imperial eagle with stiff-leaf border.
Tsee, the doctor of medicine and surgery and State Councilor, was appointed as doctor to the Cavalier Guards Regiment in 1808. He graduated as Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Dorpat (Tartu) and studied the efficacy of the mineral waters at Tver. In 1810 he was awarded the order of St. Vladimir 4th Class. For his services as doctor to the Batallion of Grand Duchess Ekaterina Pavlovna during the campaigns of 1812-15 he was awarded the order of St. Anne 2nd Class. Having studied the Caucasian mineral waters he was awarded diamonds to his order of St. Anne and elected State Councillor in 1822.
