QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
The dark beige stone is suggestive of a horizontal mountainscape with grottoes. The characteristic concentric wrinkles of the stone have been creatively utilised to represent a rushing stream cascading through the rocks, while the uneven surface is rendered a beaded texture by the integrally formed nodules.
8 1/4 in. (21 cm.), wood stand, Japanese wood box
Exhibited
Henry Moore Foundation, Objects of Contemplation: Natural Sculptures from the Qing dynasty, Leeds, 12 December 2009 - 7 March 2010
