FIRST EDITION OF NABOKOV'S FIRST NOVEL WRITTEN IN THE U.S. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED WITH A BUTTERFLY DRAWING TO VÉRA'S SISTER on the front free endpaper in Russian to Véra Nabokov's sister: "To dear Sonya from the loved [sic] Volodya. 1952." The butterfly is decorated in red, greys and blue. With Anna Feigen and Nabokov's cousin, the composer Nicolas Nabokov, Sonia was part of their tight family circle after emigrating to the United States, in 1940. In 1967, it was Sonia's telegram to Véra in Montreaux Switzerland that brought her to the States to tend to her ailing cousin Anna Feigen (see next lot). Juliar A24.1.
