Duquesnoy created multiple versions of this scene, which became very popular in French and Flemish painting of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and was reproduced in the works of Gerrit Dou and Jean-Baptist-Simeon Chardin (Boudon-Machuel, op. cit, figs. 198-201). There is a version in bronze in the Skulpturensammlung in Dresden and in marble in the Palazzo Doria Pamphili in Rome (ibid, figs. 33 and 34).
