A GREEK BRONZE HYDRIA
CLASSICAL PERIOD, CIRCA LATE 5TH-EARLY 4TH CENTURY B.C.
The tapered body with gently concave neck, with everted rim, the overhanging rim edge moulded with ovolo beneath a beaded band, the broad shoulders incised with radiating tongues emanating from the base of the neck, two pair of encircling bands above and below, the fluted horizontal handles beaded at the centre, the plates in the form of palmettes, the vertical pouring handle with beaded midrib, attached to the rim by horizontal arms terminating in beaded rotellae with central bosses, either side the head of a lion, mouth agape revealing teeth, tongue protruding, with incised whiskers and radiating mane, the lower attachment plate in the form of an inverted palmette, on a short flared foot with beaded decoration, the separately made lid of sheet bronze pierced for attachment to the rim by three bronze nails
