INDENT Second Lieutenant Edward Gerrard Austin of Wallasey, educated at Liverpool Institute and Wallasey Grammar School, enlisted in the 17th Liverpools, 'The Pals' November, 1914 and proceeded to France November, 1916; severely wounded 1 July, 1916, he was commissioned, after his recovery, into the 5th Cheshires and was sent to Egypt attached to the 2/24th Bn. London Regiment. He served in Palestine until July, 1918 and eventually returned to France. During an attack on the village of Pezières 18 September, 1918 a German machine gun opened up on the flank of his platoon. He called for volunteers and was killed rushing at the machine gun (Liverpool's Scroll of Fame refers)
