A Single-Case Lacquer Inro
Edo period (18th-19th century), signed Yoyusai and with kao (cursive monogram) and inscribed Hoitsu kishin hitsu and with red seal Bunsen
The large inro designed in high-relief brown, silver, red, gold and black lacquer with a snake emerging from the interior of a pine tree to catch a sparrow, the trunk of the tree finished to resemble the rough texture of pine bark and the skin of the snake polished to approximate the animal's natural scales, interior nashiji; fitted with a soft-metal bead ojime carved with chrysanthemums and paulownia leaves
