Lot Essay

Bernard Leach produced a large amount of porcelain ware in the 1950's and 60's, when he also made pieces with wax resist decoration. Nearly all examples of this lidded jar are decorated with bold carved brush strokes in iron oxide over cobalt, for regular production. The shape is almost certainly derived from a Chinese 14th century example. For a similar example of a conserve jar see Bernard Leach The English Potters, The Listener magazine, 2nd January 1947, and The Japan Folk Crafts Museum, Bernard Leach, (Tokyo, 2012), p.102.
