Details
HENRICUS HONDIUS (1587-1638)

[Asia] Asia recens summa cura delineata. [Amsterdam:] 1631. Hand-coloured engraved map, 372 x 500mm. 2 baroque cartouches, seas decorated with sea-monsters and galleons (lightly browned.) Window mount.

In 1630 Henricus Hondius and Jan Jansson undertook a major revision of the Mercator Atlas in response to competition from the Blaeu family of map-makers. This revised map is based on the 1623 map of Asia by Henricus's brother, Jodocus, but without the decorative panels. The map extends from the Arabian peninsula to the East Indies. Japan is based on the Ortelius/Teixeira model and Korea is shown, as often from this period, as a long peninsula. Two hunters flank the title cartouche. Tibbetts 82.
