WILLEM JANZ. BLAEU (1571-1638)
[Asia] Asia noviter delineata. [Amsterdam: c.1623]. Engraved map, verso blank, 410 x 552mm, side borders decorated with 10 costumed figures and 9 bird's-eye views of towns in upper border (2 very small stains.) Window mount.
An important and intriguing early impression of Blaeu's map of Asia. This well-known map was first published in 1623 in the Atlas Sive Cosmographicae of Hondius. Following Hondius's death in 1629, Blaeu acquired around 40 of his copperplates, altering their imprints and publishing most of them in his Appendix of 1630 and 1631, his first atlas. In these atlases, the imprints have been altered to distinguish them as Blaeu's, the title changed to 'Asia noviter delineata/Auctore Guiljelmo Blaeuw'. This issue has Blaeu's name in its early form, Guil. Janssoni. Cf. Koeman/van der Krogt II, 8000:2. Cf T.bbetts 75.
