Ernie Barnes

Ernest Eugene Barnes Jr., widely known as Ernie Barnes, was an American artist celebrated for his unique blend of athleticism, rhythm and vibrant colours that imbued in his paintings. Born in 1938 in Durham, North Carolina, Barnes painted scenes from his own life and the African American experience, focusing on themes of community, music and sports.

Barnes attended North Carolina Central University on a full athletic scholarship, where he excelled in American football and also studied art. After graduating, he pursued a professional football career with the Baltimore Colts and the San Diego Chargers in the 1960s. His experiences on the field profoundly influenced his later work as an artist, leading to the creation of iconic football paintings that captured the intensity and movement of the sport.

Ernie Barnes is best known for his distinctive style, which he coined ‘neo-mannerism’. His paintings are characterised by elongated figures and exaggerated movements, conveying a sense of rhythm and energy. One of his most famous works, The Sugar Shack (1976), exemplifies this style. The painting, which portrays a lively dance scene in a packed nightclub, gained widespread recognition when it was featured in the closing credits of the television show ‘Good Times’ and on the cover of Marvin Gaye’s album I Want You. The Sugar Shack by Ernie Barnes remains an iconic piece, having sold at Christie’s for a world auction record price of US$15,275,000 in 2022, celebrated for its vibrant portrayal of African American culture and joyous atmosphere.

Ernie Barnes passed away in 2009, but his legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences. His paintings, filled with movement, emotion, and cultural significance, offer a unique and powerful perspective on the world.
