Herb Ritts was a famous American photographer and director known for his black-and-white photos that combined classic beauty with modern style. He worked in many areas, including celebrity portraits, fashion and advertising. His photos were featured in top magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone. He also created iconic ad campaigns for brands like Calvin Klein, Chanel and Versace, shaping fashion in the 1980s and 1990s.
Born in Los Angeles in 1952, Ritts grew up immersed in art and culture, which shaped his appreciation for aesthetics. While he initially pursued a degree in economics at Bard College, photography captured his imagination in the late 1970s. A turning point came when he photographed his friend, actor Richard Gere, in a casual shoot that caught the eye of magazine editors. This led to Ritts’ rapid rise in the fashion world.
Ritts was drawn to clean lines and strong forms in both his life and work. This graphic simplicity allowed his images to be immediately understood and deeply felt. Herb Ritts photography often challenged conventional notions of gender and race. They used elegance and minimalism to explore and subvert social norms. Through his lens, Ritts captured both social history and fantasy, creating memorable images of figures in film, fashion, music, politics and society.
His ability to capture the human body with sculptural precision, often using natural light and stark backgrounds, became his signature style. His images of supermodels like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington redefined beauty standards, while his portraits of celebrities like Madonna, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Elizabeth Taylor became cultural landmarks.
Beyond still photography, Ritts directed several iconic music videos, such as Madonna's ‘Cherish’ and Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’, known for their elegant, cinematic quality. His work bridged the worlds of fashion and art, creating images that were both beautiful and powerful in their simplicity.
Herb Ritts passed away in 2002, but his legacy lives on through his influential work, which continues to inspire photographers and artists today. His unique vision remains a lasting influence in fashion, art and visual culture.
