New York | November 2021
The past months have had a lasting impact on the way we experience the world. In these times of change, Christie’s unveiled an innovative approach to presenting art of the 20th and 21st centuries in May. Our global 20th/21st Century Art auction series reflects evolving market demands and collecting habits, breaking through traditional sale categories to make new stylistic connections, elevate masterpieces and discover extraordinary emerging works — both physical and digital.
In May 2021, Christie’s made auction house history with its inaugural 20th/21st Century sale week, reflecting a categorial realignment in its auctions’ longstanding nomenclature. This November, Christie’s 20th/21st Century Art Evening Sales realised a combined total of $971,176,750 across three sales and two animated nights of bidding, and a grand total of $1,109,415,750 for the week.
The Cox Collection: The Story of Impressionism
This season, Christie's celebrates a devoted collector who pursued the ‘best of the best’. As visionary collector with a connoisseur’s eye, Edwin Lochridge Cox (1921-2020) built one of the most prestigious and important collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works. Seminal paintings acquired by Cox — including rarely seen masterpieces by Gustave Caillebotte, Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh will be on offer in a dedicated Evening sale at Christie's New York on 11 November.
Browse the collection and explore our special features to discover how the Cox collection tells the story of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
