NEW YORK SPRING AUCTION WEEK EXCEEDS $1 BILLION
Christie’s 20th Century Week achieved a total of $1,072,596,250, highlighted by 17 artist world auction records in the Impressionist and Modern Art and Post-War and Contemporary Art sales, including the world record price for a living artist with the sale of Rabbit by Jeff Koons for $91,075,000.
Global clients participated in two Evening Sales, four Day Sale sessions and one online-only sale of Picasso Ceramics, while 16,000 visitors attended the exhibition at Christie’s New York galleries.
This season, Christie’s sales featured significant artworks from important private American collections, creating singular collecting opportunities for masterpieces not seen on the market in decades. The exceptional quality drove global client interest with significant activity from American and Asian buyers throughout the sales. On Monday, Paul Cézanne’s Bouilloire et fruits realized $59,295,000 as the top lot of Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale and was purchased by an Asian buyer. On Wednesday, multiple bidders chased Jeff Koons’s Rabbit to $91,075,000, setting a new auction record price for any living artist.
Concurrent sales at Christie’s Geneva this week totaled an additional CHF 77,203,607 ($77,203,607 / € 67,939,174) with a combined sell-through rate of 89%.
Christie’s sales continue in Hong Kong from 24-29 May including the 20th Century & Contemporary Art Evening Sale on 25 May.
