Shanghai Autumn Auctions 2018

Christie’s held its sixth year of Shanghai sales, today achieving a combined total of RMB 148,341,600, a 50% increase on the previous year’s Autumn sales.《13.02.92》 by Zao Wou-Ki became the most expensive work of art to be sold in Christie’s Shanghai when it achieved RMB 45,600,000, while Western artworks were strongly pursued by collectors, achieving a 100% sell- through rate.

Jussi Pylkkanen, Christie’s Global President, commented: “After six years of sales here in Shanghai the market in China has reached a point where demand for great Western Art is so high that this important section of the sale was 100% sold in tonight’s memorable sale. We look forward to expanding our Western Art exhibition programme here in China to match the demands of Chinese collectors. The sales tonight proved that Shanghai is maturing as an international art centre of great significance.”

Rebecca Wei, President Christie’s Asia, continued: “Christie’s Shanghai salesroom further establishes itself as a global platform, bringing together the best of art from around the world, while deepening a cross-cultural dialogue among collectors. We remain committed to contributing to the art market in China and look forward to a series of engaging art forums, lectures and events in new cities such as Nanjing and Guangzhou later this season”.

Charlotte Liu, Managing Director, Christie’s China, further remarked commented: “We are greatly encouraged by the exceptional results achieved by Western artworks which were 100% sold, demonstrating the strong demand for the category in China. Both young and established artists witnessed strong buying from Chinese and international clients, demonstrating continued appetite for top quality works from a range of categories. Once again, we set a record with Zao Wou-ki, whose work became the most expensive lot ever sold by Christie’s Shanghai, which contributed to an overall sale total that was 50% higher than last year”.
