Dubbed as the ‘king of kink’, Helmut Newton was a German-Australian photographer renowned for his provocative and stylised black-and-white fashion photography. Born in 1920 in Berlin as Helmut Neustädter, Newton fled Nazi Germany in 1938 and eventually settled in Australia, where he changed his surname and began his illustrious career. His unique vision and daring approach to photography have made him one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.
Newton created powerful and memorable images that challenged traditional notions of beauty and femininity. His photographs often feature strong, confident women in commanding poses, exploring themes of power, dominance and sensuality. Helmut Newton nudes, in particular, became iconic for their raw and unapologetic portrayal of the female form.
In his Big Nudes series Big Nudes, Newton showcased his mastery of the human body and his ability to convey a sense of strength and vulnerability simultaneously through these large-scale photographs. In 2022 Christie’s established a world auction record for the artist with his “Big Nude III” (Variation), Paris (photographed in 1980), selling for US$2,340,000.
Throughout his career, Newton’s images were a mainstay of leading fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Elle. Helmut Newton found his mature form in the 1970s in the city of Paris and most specifically in the pages of the French edition of Vogue, to which he was a regular and increasingly significant contributor.
Newton found endless inspiration in Paris, discovering locations laden with history and atmosphere, and drawing on his fascinated observations of the gestures, style, manners, and habits of a certain class of woman. He found a particular magic in the streets of Paris at night, acknowledging his appreciation of the mysterious nocturnal images of Brassaï. One of his most emblematic images Rue Aubriot, (YSL + Nude), Paris, 1975 was sold at Christie’s Paris in 2019 for €65,000.
Today, Helmut Newton’s work remains highly regarded and widely collected. His daring and provocative images challenge viewers to reconsider their perceptions of beauty, power, and sensuality. The enduring impact of photos by Helmut Newton and his distinctive style continue to captivate and inspire new generations of photographers, including Mark Arbeit, Just Loomis and George Holz, who worked as his assistants.
