Andres Serrano

Andres Serrano (b. 1950) is a pioneering American photographer whose provocative and often controversial works confront themes of religion, identity and societal taboos. Born in New York City to a Honduran father and an Afro-Cuban mother, he was raised in Brooklyn and attended the Brooklyn Museum Art School from 1967 to 1969. Although trained in painting and sculpture, Serrano is primarily self-taught in photography. His early works, influenced by his Catholic upbringing and the teachings of Marcel Duchamp, often explored the use of bodily fluids to create visceral, thought-provoking images.

Serrano gained international attention in the late 1980s with his photograph Piss Christ (1987), an image of a crucifix submerged in a glass container of what was purported to be the artist's own urine. The piece sparked widespread controversy and ignited debates about the boundaries of artistic expression and the use of public funding for the arts. Despite the backlash, Serrano continued to produce works that challenged societal norms and explored complex themes.

Throughout his career, Serrano has produced several notable series, including Immersions, The Klan, The Morgue and America. These works often juxtapose religious iconography with elements of violence, race and mortality, prompting viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about contemporary society. His photographs are characterised by their striking compositions, vivid colours and meticulous attention to detail.

Serrano's work is held in numerous prestigious public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris.
