Johann Heinrich Füssli (1741–1825) was a Swiss-born painter and draughtsman whose dramatic and visionary works became a defining force in the late 18th-century Romantic movement. Born in Zürich, Füssli initially trained as a lawyer but soon abandoned the profession to pursue art, studying at the Royal Academy in London and absorbing the currents of Neoclassicism alongside burgeoning Romantic ideals.
Füssli’s art is distinguished by its intense exploration of the subconscious, myth and the supernatural, often manifesting in striking, theatrical compositions that convey psychological tension and emotional extremes. His paintings frequently depict scenes from literature, mythology and the Bible, rendered with a heightened sense of drama through bold chiaroscuro and exaggerated figures. Works such as The Nightmare (1781) exemplify his ability to capture unsettling and uncanny atmospheres, blending gothic sensibilities with classical techniques.
A prolific draughtsman, Füssli produced numerous studies and sketches that reveal his fascination with human anatomy, movement and expression. His drawings served both as preparatory work and as standalone explorations of dreamlike and fantastic imagery. Through his teaching and writings, Füssli influenced a generation of British artists and helped to shape Romanticism’s emphasis on imagination and emotional intensity.
Füssli’s innovative blending of classical form with visionary content positions him as a pivotal figure who bridged Enlightenment ideals with the emerging Romantic sensibility, leaving a lasting impact on the trajectory of European art.
