Peter Halley

Peter Halley (born 1953) is an American painter whose conceptual, geometric abstractions have made him a seminal figure in postmodern art. Born in New York City, Halley studied at Yale University, where he was exposed to Minimalism, Conceptual art and the theoretical discourses of the late 20th century. These early influences informed his interest in systems, structures and the social implications of architecture.

Halley’s work is characterised by the use of geometric forms — cells, conduits and prisms — rendered in saturated, synthetic colours. Using Day-Glo acrylics and Roll-a-Tex, his canvases and works on paper explore the intersections of urban architecture, digital networks and social systems, often reflecting on the alienating effects of modern infrastructure and technology.

Emerging during the 1980s alongside Neo-Geo artists, Halley’s paintings interrogate the language of abstraction and its relationship to contemporary life, critiquing societal structures while drawing on the legacy of Minimalism and Pop. His works have been widely exhibited internationally, including at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Tate, London, and are held in major public and private collections.
