A Townhouse in Seville
Sale Overview
“Two born-and-bred Andalusians from Seville who left for the big city at a very young age, where they would fulfill their dreams and those of many others. Together, they bore witness to the soul, the grace, the cheerfulness and the essence of Andalusian women, the passionate celebration of ages-old traditions, the burst of spring, summer’s freedom, most secretive autumns, winters behind closed doors... the fields, the warmth of braziers, the magnificent countryside and the Easter pageants. Their identity is marked by elegance, colour, big displays, fantasy and the enjoyment of works of art in legendary environments. The essence of Cervantes, a love for Venice and an everlasting popular craft with Arabic overtones. Their names alone made them famous. Essential Sevillians.”
— Pilar González de Gregorio, Chairman, Christie’s Spain.
This selection of works from a beautiful townhouse in the heart of Seville, comprising just a small part of a larger collection, was put together with a traditional yet eclectic eye by its owners whose own creations are reflected in the rich and fantastical yet elegant interiors they created. The works of art collected by these two connoisseurs are classical in flavour – the strong theme of Catholic iconography sat happily alongside Roman antiquities and paintings of mythological subjects, and in their choice of gilded finishes, rich furnishings and luxurious fabrics they paid homage to their Spanish heritage. Estimates range from £400 - £40,000 and highlights include Adam & Eve by Jacob de Backer, a pair of Régence giltwood fauteuils with tapestry covers and an Empire giltwood centre table with griffin supports.
