Sale Overview

Christie’s sale of American Art on 27 February 2013 achieved $1,753,125/ £1,157,063/ €1,332,375 and was sold 73% by lot and 82% by value.  The top lot of the sale was Milton Avery’s Evening Beach (pictured right), which realized $146,500.

Jennifer Klaus, Associate Specialist and Head of Sale, comments: “Following the category’s remarkably successful Fall season, we have continued to achieve top prices in our first sale of 2013. The sale’s cover lot, Evening Beach by Milton Avery, surpassed its estimate, realizing $146,500, while Trappers, one of thirty panels that Jacob Lawrence painted for his series Struggle…From the History of the American People, sold for $86,500, more than tripling its high estimate. Collectors’ high interest in American works of all genres, including 20th century Modernism and the Hudson River School, leaves us looking forward to Christie’s next sale of American Art in May.”
