Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds including Rugs and Carpets
Sale Overview
This October, Christie’s live auction of Art of the Islamic and Indian Words Including Rugs and Carpets will be held in our London saleroom. Leading the sale is a previously unrecorded 17th-century large silk ‘Polonaise’ carpet. This exciting new discovery was woven during the reign of Shah Abbas the Great and has remained preserved in remarkable condition in a Japanese private collection until very recently. Additional highlights include an important Florentine portrait of Süleyman the Magnificent, a rare pair of Sasanian silver bottles, and two beautiful folios from the Impey album by the master artist Shaykh Zayn al-Din. We’re also offering works of Indian and Persian art from the collection of Paul Richard Loewi and his daughter Erica, which include the important ‘Loewi’ Khamsa.
Following the resounding success of the April sale, Sultans of Silk: The George Farrow Collection Part II continues to highlight the fine silk rugs of the Koum Kapi ‘master weavers’ of Istanbul. The sale also includes the ‘London Collection’, a collector’s choice which features many of the iconic examples of carpet design that we associate with the rugs of the Caucasus, Anatolia and other weaving centres from along the Silk Road.
