Sale Overview

This 15th of July, the Collector sale taking place in London will offer a wide array of the finest European and English furniture and works of art, ceramics, silver, gold boxes of the seventeenth to the end of the nineteenth centuries. The 253 lots feature the greatest designers and makers including Jacques Dubois, François Rémond, Gioacchino Barberi, François Linke, Christofle, Marsh and Tatham among others. The sale comprises many pieces with important Royal and aristocratic provenance including a Meissen tea bowl and saucer given by Augustus the Strong, King of Poland to King Christian VI of Denmark (lot 83); a silver garniture offered as a wedding gift in 1878 to Ernest Augustus, Crown Prince of Hanover and his wife the Princess Thyra of Denmark (lot 207); a gilt-tooled red leather travel cases delivered to King Louis XV’s daughters (lot 13) and a steel razor belonging to the Duc d’Angoulême (lot 10).

Kit Kemp’s international reputation spans across design and hospitality, as founder and creative director of Firmdale Hotels, author, textile, fragrance and homeware designer and highly respected champion of British art, craft and sculpture. Kit has styled a virtual viewing room for The Collector, building out compelling interior narratives around the works in the sale to highlight their historical and creative significance.

Highlights of the sale include a Louis XV lacquer bureau en pente by Jacques Dubois (lot 22, £100,000-150,000), a near pair of commodes à l’anglaise by Henry Dasson (lot 258, £100,000 -200,000), a pair of German porcelain ‘Schneeballen’ vases (lot 289, £40,000-60,000), a German gold-mounted hardstone snuff box by Friedrich Ludwig Hoffmann, (lot 130, £30,000-50,000).
