Sale Overview

Christie’s Antiquities sale in London on 2 July will feature a diverse selection of objects from across the Mediterranean world, including works of art from ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Byzantine cultures, ranging in date from the 3rd millennium BC to the 12th century AD.

Among the sale highlights is a Roman marble head of Venus of the Aspremont-Lynden/Arles Type, dating to the 1st century BC from an Athenian original of the 4th century BC, and an extremely fine Roman marble head of a maenad, previously in the collection of Château des Clées, Switzerland, a Medieval castle which was completely restored by Rev. Walter Stevenson Halliday (1794–1872) in the Gothic Revival style.

Christie’s is honoured to present a group of ancient jewellery formerly in the collection of Ernst and Marthe Kofler-Truniger of Lucerne. Highlights include a Greek Hellenistic gold necklace with a pendant in the shape of a butterfly, composed of gold, garnet, banded agate and glass, and a rare and important Greek box-bezel ring composed of a rock crystal dome protecting the intricate golf filigree floral decoration formerly in the collection of Ernest Guilhou (1844–1911).

Claudio Corsi joined the Antiquities department at Christie’s in October 2016, after a 7-year-long career in the Antiquities market. He joined Bonhams in 2010 and for three years he was in charge of the bi-annual Antiquities sale in the Knightsbridge saleroom. He then moved to Chiswick Auctions where he set-up their Antiquities and Tribal Art Department.

Claudio started his studies at the University of Siena, Italy, where he obtained a BA in Archaeology and an MA in Classical Archaeology, gaining valuable practical experience joining excavation campaigns in Italy and Greece. He then earned an MPhil in Heritage Studies at Cambridge University, UK, where he expanded his knowledge on the issues surrounding the movement of cultural and archaeological goods and their importance in modern day society.

Specialist | Ancient Art & Antiquities

Chanel Clarke is a Specialist in the Antiquities Department, based in London. Chanel started at Christie’s in 2014 in the Client Services department, handling external and internal queries relating to all aspects of bidding, buying and selling. In 2016 she joined the Antiquities department as Sale Coordinator and was appointed Junior Specialist the same year and later Associate Specialist. In her role as Specialist, she sources and appraises material across Europe, contributing to the department’s biannual sales through provenance research and cataloguing.
Chanel graduated from The University of Edinburgh with a first class MA Joint Honors in Classics and the Scandinavian Languages, where she had focussed predominantly on Early and Archaic Greek art and archaeology.

Eleonora Pontiggia

Sales Coordinator, Classic Art Group | Ancient Art & Antiquities

Eleonora Pontiggia is a Sales Coordinator for the Classic Art Group, based in London. Eleonora joined Christie’s in 2020 in the Old Master Paintings department before moving on to work with the Estates, Appraisal & Valuations team as a Valuation Coordinator. In 2024 she joined the Classic Art Group as Sales Coordinator working primarily with the Antiquities and Ceramics departments. Eleonora holds a Master Degree in Art History and Art World Practice from Christie’s Education with a particular focus on English and European Decorative Arts.
