Ancient Wonders: Antiquities and Natural History

Ancient Wonders: Antiquities and Natural History

Sale Overview

Christie’s is proud to present Ancient Wonders: Antiquities and Natural History again this Classic Week. Works from ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Near East are offered alongside dinosaurs, fossils and meteorites, spanning four millennia of human achievement and billions of years of deep time.

This sale juxtaposes extraordinary geological creations with the craftsmanship of humankind, appealing to the scholar, scientist and aesthete alike.

A true highlight of the sale is the Property from a Noble Collection, which leads with an impressive Roman marble statue of Asclepius (c. 1st century AD). Other notable Antiquities include a magnificent Greek bronze Chalcidian helmet from the Late Classical to Hellenistic period (c. 350-250 BC), an Attic black-figured neck-amphora depicting Hercules battling the Amazons (c. 530-520 BC), and an Egyptian funerary linen square from the New Kingdom.

The Natural History section features a fantastic selection of fine minerals and highly sculptural fossils – a stand-out of which is the enigmatically spiked ammonite – and many will be offered with No Reserve.

Together, these works — whether shaped by human hands or by immense forces of nature — offer collectors a unique opportunity to engage with the origins of artistic expression and the enduring human impulse to admire the wonders of the ancient world.

All works will be on view at Christie’s King Street from 27 November to 3 December as part of the Classic Week series of sales and exhibitions.
