Barbier-Mueller : Art as Legacy

Barbier-Mueller : Art as Legacy

Sale Overview

Christie’s is delighted to announce the Barbier-Mueller : Art as Legacy auction of African and Oceanic art. This selection of one hundred exceptional works illustrating decades of enlightened passion will pay tribute to the collectors Josef Müller, Jean Paul and Monique Barbier-Mueller.

Josef Müller (1887-1977) is the founder of the Barbier-Mueller collection. A true reference for the art world, he stands among the principal connoisseurs of the European Avant-Garde and, from the dawn of the 20th century, as one of the pioneers dedicated to the exploration of arts from non-European cultures. A visionary polymath endowed with an exceptional taste for art, he would build over the years a most remarkable and diverse collection.
From the 1970s, Jean Paul (1930-2016) and Monique (1929-2019) Barbier-Mueller would complete and enrich this unique collection in their own right. They added African sculptures of previously unseen typologies and rare Oceanic artworks, of which Jean Paul Barbier-Mueller would become one of the foremost collectors of his time. These remarkable acquisitions brought an enormous ethnographic and aesthetic wealth to the collection. Monique Barbier-Mueller, with her deep love for the African continent, would also contribute considerably. Her refined choices have added numerous gems to the ensemble.

Over the course of close to a century, these three outstanding collectors built thus an extraordinary collection of works that tell the story of African and Oceanic art across multiple centuries.
