Sale Overview
Total: HK$26,775,000 / US$3,470,040 / £2,283,908 / €3,188,903
“Christie’s Chinese contemporary ink auction saw continued momentum from the inaugural sale last November. ‘Aberdeen’ by Lui Shou Kwan (1919-1975), with its nostalgic portrayal of Hong Kong’s fishing village and its excellent provenance from the Dr K.S. Lo Collection was the top lot, selling for ten times its estimate. Works by Lui Shou Kwan and fellow Hong Kong artists such as Irene Chou (1924-2011) and Wucius Wong (B. 1936) also performed exceptionally well. Liu Kuo-sung’s (B. 1932) works saw strong results, with all six works selling well above estimate. Other top lots include Li Huayi’s (B. 1948) landscape work ‘Snow-covered Mountains’. The sale demonstrates collectors’ enthusiasm for modernism synthesized with traditional ink and the exciting blend of the new and the old,” said Carmen Shek Cerne, Head of Christie’s Chinese Contemporary Ink Sale.
